4 tips to help project managers work more effective in a hybrid environment.

1. Agree roles early

Project life is easier when roles and responsibilities are clear. In environments where face-to-face engagement may be limited and where there’s more reliance on people working autonomously this becomes more important.

Clarify and agree with team members their role and the project deliverables assigned to them. Goal setting also helps maintain focus and motivation.

2. Facilitate sharing of information and knowledge

Information and knowledge sharing can at times be restricted in a hybrid environment. Setting up a go-to-spot where everyone can find the latest highlights, news, issues, lessons and progress information can help connect the team with key need-to-know information.

3. Understand the team’s effectiveness to deliver

Remember true performance of a project is determined by its ability to deliver. Agree and prioritize deliverables with your team early and consider dividing the work into timeboxes to help track performance. Starting with shorter timeboxes can also enable an early assessment of the team’s effectiveness in a hybrid environment.

4. Agree the reporting method early and make it interesting

Tracking progress can become more difficult when people are working remotely. This will require some careful thought early in the project. Agree with the team when and what to report and explore the use of a reporting tool that everyone can use, with visualisations that can help keep the team interested in progress information
